Healing Without the Performance
Updated: Sep 22
The gospel does not require you to be impressive in your brokenness. It requires you to bring it.
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
Psalm 147:3
Brokenheartedness is not a metaphor for a bad mood. In Scripture it is the collapse of the inner structure — grief, betrayal, shame, the slow erosion of hope. Almighty God is not embarrassed by this condition. He specializes in binding.
Religious performance is a common bandage that is not medicine. We serve more, speak more, post more, hide better. The wound remains, and now it is dressed in spiritual vocabulary. Jesus Christ preferred the honesty of beggars to the costumes of those who would not admit need.
Healing, biblically, is often gradual and communal. There are instant miracles, and we should ask for them without cynicism. There is also the long binding — counseling, confession, Scripture soaking the mind, the Spirit teaching a nervous system that it is safe to rest, the Church becoming a place where tears are not a scandal.
If you have been told that strong faith never limps, you have been told a lie. Jacob limped after he was blessed. Thomas needed to see. Peter was restored after collapse. The wow of Christian healing is not the erasure of history. It is the redemption of it — scars that no longer rule, and sometimes even shine.
Bring the actual wound, not the improved edition. Prayer that names the true injury can do more in five minutes than months of vague spirituality. The Holy Spirit is not waiting for a better version of you to arrive. He works with clay that is still wet.
Reflection
What wound have you been managing instead of offering? What would it cost you to be unimpressive in the presence of God and one trusted person?
Practice
Write the wound in one unexaggerated paragraph and pray it aloud to God.
Ask for healing specifically — body, mind, relationship, memory — without coaching God on method.
Receive care: sleep, a physician if needed, a pastor, a coach. Means are not unbelief.
A prayer for you
Almighty God, You bind up wounds we have grown used to hiding. Jesus Christ, wounded healer, come near. Holy Spirit, comfort without flattery and heal without spectacle if that is Your way — or with power if You will. For the brokenhearted reader, be tender and strong. We trust You with what we cannot fix. Amen.
Spiritual coaching and Christian meditation at Ruach are quiet rooms for this work — Scripture, prayer, and presence while Almighty God binds what performance cannot.
