Hope in a Modern Age
Christian hope is not optimism. Optimism is a weather forecast. Hope is a Person who has already broken a tomb.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
Romans 15:13
Paul does not tell exhausted people to try harder at cheerfulness. He blesses them with a God who is named Hope, a joy and peace that arrive in believing, and a Holy Spirit who makes hope abundant — not scarce, not rationed, not for the temperamentally sunny.
A modern age produces counterfeit hopes: that politics will finally save, that money will finally soothe, that numbness will finally protect. These hopes are understandable and too small. They cannot carry death, or guilt, or the longing to be made new.
Jesus Christ is hope with wounds still visible. That is why Christian hope can sit in a hospital and not lie. It does not require you to deny the hardness. It requires you to refuse the last word to the hardness. The resurrection is not a metaphor for springtime. It is an event that reorganized the meaning of every grave.
Joy and peace in believing — notice the location. Not in controlling. Not in predicting. In trusting the character of Almighty God when the spreadsheet of your life does not yet add up. That kind of joy can coexist with tears. In fact, it often arrives as tears: the relief of not being the savior of your own story.
Abounding hope is a Spirit-powered overflow. If you are running on fumes, the assignment is not to fake abundance. It is to come, again, to the God of hope, and ask to be filled. Filling is something that is done to you. That is good news for the empty.
Reflection
What smaller hope have you been leaning on as if it were a messiah? What would it mean to abound — not in outcomes, but in hope — this week?
Practice
Read a resurrection account slowly (John 20 or Luke 24) as news.
When despair speaks in universals (“always,” “never”), answer with one concrete mercy.
Bless someone harder-pressed than you with a word of living hope.
A prayer for you
God of hope, fill us. We have sipped at cisterns that leak. Jesus Christ, risen Lord, be our future in the present. Holy Spirit, make hope abound in the reader who can barely lift their head. Give joy and peace in believing. Amen.
Devotionals, sermons, and Christian films in Red Letters are curated to feed this kind of hope — Christ has risen!
