Light That Refuses to Hide

The call is not to become a spotlight. It is to stop putting a basket over a flame someone else already lit.

I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

John 8:12

Jesus Christ does not first tell you to be impressive. He tells you He is light, and that following Him means you will have light — not manufacture it. This order saves us from the exhaustion of trying to glow by willpower.

Darkness, in John’s Gospel, is not merely sadness. It is the realm of refusal, of hiding, of loving a lesser light because it does not expose us. To walk with Christ is to consent to being seen, and then to become a place where others can see.

Many sincere people hide for noble-sounding reasons: they do not want to be hypocrites; they are tired; they fear getting it wrong. Humility is good. Disappearance is not the same thing. A city on a hill that apologizes for existing has misunderstood its assignment.

Light in a dark age looks like truth-telling without cruelty, hope without naivete, holiness without disdain. It looks like showing up to the street, the table, the study, the song. It looks like a parent blessing a child, a worker refusing a dishonest shortcut, a believer praying when no one is scoring it.

The wow is derivative and therefore restful: you are not the sun. You are a window, a lamp, a moon. The light is Christ’s. Burnout often comes from trying to be the source. Union with the Spirit is how a person shines without self-immolation.

If your light has dimmed, the answer is not shame. It is oil. Return to the Word. Return to prayer. Return to the people of God. Lamps are tended. They are not scolded into brightness.

Reflection

Where have you hidden what Christ has done, calling it humility? Where have you tried to be the sun, calling it ministry?

Practice

  1. Do one visible good this week that cannot be posted — light for God’s eyes.

  2. Tell one person a true, small story of Jesus’ help without polishing it.

  3. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you one basket you have placed over your life, and remove it.

A prayer for you

Lord Jesus, You are the light of the world. We have walked in shadows of our own making. Almighty God, kindle what has cooled. Holy Spirit, tend the lamp. Make us windows, not billboards; presence, not performance. For the one whose light is nearly out, pour oil. Amen.

Worship nights, street ministry, and Spirit-led gatherings with Ruach are simple rooms to stand in the light with others — and to let it be seen without strain.
