The Body Needs a Body
Updated: Sep 22
You cannot be the Church by yourself. The New Testament does not even know how to say that sentence without contradiction.
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together… but encouraging one another.
Hebrews 10:24–25
The writer of Hebrews assumes that love and good works require stirring. Left alone, even sincere believers cool. Isolation is not neutrality. It is a climate. In that climate, odd theologies thrive, offenses fossilize, and discouragement sounds like discernment.
Meeting together is more than sitting in parallel facing a stage. It is considering one another — attention as a spiritual gift. Online fellowships can participate in this when they are real conversation around a real text, not merely content delivered to a crowd of mute consumers.
If you have been hurt by Christian community, the wound is not imaginary. The answer, however, is almost never a private Christianity of one. That is how hurt becomes a new law. The Spirit forms a people. Jesus Christ is building an assembly, not a collection of spiritual independents.
Encouragement in Scripture is not cheerleading. It is putting courage in. Sometimes it feels like comfort. Sometimes it feels like a holy nudge toward the good work you have delayed. Bible study at its best does both: it opens the text and it refuses to let you disappear.
The wow of true fellowship is being known and not discarded. In a world of curated selves, a circle that can hear a confession and still pass the bread is a miracle of the Kingdom. Seek that. Become that for someone else.
Reflection
Have you confused independence with maturity? Who is actually allowed to stir you up — and whom are you considering with that same care?
Practice
Show up to one gathering this week even if you feel behind.
Send one specific encouragement rooted in Scripture, not vague positivity.
Ask someone how you can pray, then pray in the message before you forget.
A prayer for you
Almighty God, You set the lonely in families and the wounded in churches. Heal what community has broken, and break our addiction to going alone. Jesus Christ, Head of the body, attach us rightly. Holy Spirit, stir us to love and good works. Amen.
