Weakness, Transfigured
The gospel does not despise your limits. It refuses to let them be the most interesting thing about you — because Christ’s power is made perfect there.
My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.
2 Corinthians 12:9
Paul begged for a thorn to be removed. The answer was not removal. It was sufficient grace and a shocking thesis: power perfected in weakness. This is not a celebration of dysfunction. It is the end of the illusion that Almighty God is waiting for you to become an adequate messiah of your own life.
Many of the people who come for spiritual coaching are exhausted from trying to be impressive for God. They have confused sanctification with self-improvement branding. Jesus Christ is not hiring. He is saving. The Holy Spirit does not need your highlight reel. He needs your honesty.
Weakness transfigured is different from weakness displayed as identity. The first brings the limit to Christ and finds a strange strength — patience, courage, a softer voice, a truer prayer. The second builds a shrine to the limit and calls it authenticity. The gospel will heal the shrine.
There is a wow, wet-eyed and quiet, when you stop performing competence and discover you are still loved. Sufficient grace is not barely enough. It is enough, which for a starving person is a feast. You may still have the thorn. You will not have to pretend you do not.
If you are in a season of reduced capacity — illness, grief, failure, the long plateau — you have not been disqualified from the Kingdom. You may have been positioned to learn the only power that does not corrupt: the power that works through a cracked vessel on purpose.
Reflection
What weakness are you hiding from God as if He were an interviewer? What if it is the very place He intends to show that the power is His?
Practice
Tell Almighty God the thorn in one unadorned sentence. Do not improve it.
Ask a trusted believer to pray over that sentence without offering a fix.
Do one small obedience from weakness rather than waiting to feel strong.
A prayer for you
Almighty God, Your grace is sufficient, and we have lived as if it were not. Jesus Christ, whose power is perfected in weakness, take the thorn we cannot pull. Holy Spirit, transfigure our limits into places of communion. For the reader ashamed of reduced capacity, speak enough. Amen.
Spiritual coaching at Ruach is a place to bring the thorn — not to be made impressive, but to learn sufficient grace in real time.
